DART HMP Birmingham
Our DART (Drug & Alcohol Recovery Team) at HMP Birmingham provides an essential service to the prisoners entering HMP Birmingham through to the time they leave us.
In line with Prison Service National Drug & Alcohol Strategies we have developed a bespoke service that meets our service users intense needs in a busy local remand prison with a significantly high turnover of prisoners.
HMP Birmingham is a Victorian local prison built in 1849, located in Winson Green near the centre of Birmingham. It is a category B Prison holding 1450 adult remand and sentenced male prisoners.
We have provided the psychosocial element of the substance misuse treatment services within HMP Birmingham since 2005 when it was known as CARAT (Counselling, Assessment, Referral, Advice, Throughcare) services and have seen significant changes during this time.We have experienced and trained DART Recovery works within our team and this has helped us to continue to meet the demands of the population through difficult transition periods such as a prison expansion and at the beginning of the contract to the transfer on the first ever public prison into the private estate.
Our DART service provides interventions that are proven to work to individuals presenting with drug and/or alcohol problems. Whilst we do not provide the pharmacological interventions at HMP Birmingham, our team actively support individuals who receive this treatment and work in collaboration with the IDTS (integrated Drug Treatment Service) within the Healthcare function.
